Eva had lied to her father. She’d made no arrangements to stay with a friend overnight. Her fellow medical student Helga Grímsdottir told Emil that she knew nothing about it and hadn’t seen Eva since she took off for the UK. Concluding that Kristján and Eva had gone into hiding together, as Frankie had suggested, Anna decide to send Emil to Ísafjörður while she Skyped Kristján’s father to ask if his son had returned to the family home.

The man spoke little English, so the telephone interview was conducted in Icelandic. Frankie didn’t need to master the language to know that it was a useless exercise. From the man’s tone and body language she could interpret that he hadn’t a clue where the lad was.

‘Takk,’ Anna said, ending the call.

She slipped her phone in her trouser pocket. No jeans today. She was dressed in a navy suit, a crisp white shirt, her hair tied up in a soft feminine bun with braiding intertwined. It was a good look that suited her, very attractive, a style Frankie wouldn’t dream of trying to replicate.

‘Well?’ Although she knew the answer, she had to ask.

‘No joy.’ Anna glanced at her watch, then up at Frankie. ‘He’ll be in touch if Kristján shows up, with or without Eva. I have to go out for a while. If I hear anything, I’ll let you know. Emil will do likewise. He should be landing about now. If Kristján is in the area, he will be found.’

‘I wish I had your confidence.’

‘Believe me, Emil is good at this. Ours is a very small world, Frankie. Ísafjörður even smaller, only two and half thousand people live there. It would be harder for Emil to miss than find them.’

‘I may as well have gone with him. I’m in the way here.’ Since early, Anna’s phone had been ringing off the hook, a long line of detectives Frankie had never seen before in and out of her office, all talking excitedly. Anna had been in her element issuing orders Frankie couldn’t understand. ‘You have multiple investigations to be getting on with, interviews, briefings, lock-ups on the horizon.’

Anna didn’t admit or deny it.

Frankie never had been any good at fishing. ‘I’ll die of boredom if we don’t find those kids soon. Is there anything I can help you with? I’d offer to man the phones if your lot spoke Geordie.’

‘You can help by keeping the faith.’ Anna glanced at the wall clock above the murder wall. ‘Are you going out or waiting here for news? It’s up to you.’

‘No, I need some air.’

Frankie walked her from the building. There was obviously something going down. Anna didn’t mention what it was and she didn’t ask. Ignoring her wave, Anna took off at speed, leaving her British guest affronted on the pavement. ‘Have a nice day,’ Frankie whispered sarcastically.

For a couple of hours, Frankie had been wandering around Reykjavík city centre in the vain hope of spotting her targets. She was cold and miserable. While the UK was enjoying amazing weather, it was raining in Iceland.
